EVENT TO BE HELD AUGUST 3, 2020 / 11:30am

New York –The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and the Friends of St. Nicholas will resume construction of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine at the World Trade Center on August 3, 2020. Archbishop Elpidophoros of America will deliver remarks and bless the construction site and its workers. The event will be followed by a press availability and observing the installation of the domes first skylight.

WHY:Construction had halted in December of 2017 as a result of mismanagement and other financial issues. With the election of a new Archbishop, and with the formation of the Friends of St. Nicholas, the project has experienced an unprecedented turnaround which is now propelling the Church and National Shrine to completion. With the assistance and support of Governor Andrew Cuomo, thePort Authority of New York & New Jersey, faithful stewards of theGreek Orthodox Archdiocese and many others, the only house of worship destroyed during the terror attacks of 9/11 is set to re-open in the fall of 2021. When completed, the new St. NicholasGreek Orthodox Church and National Shrine will be a beacon of light at the World Trade Center that will shine the world over as a symbol of good vs. evil and provide a prayerful place for the many people who visit the 9/11 memorial.
